Catholic Lay Response is an independent initiative by the Leadership Crisis Action Committee (LCAC) at St. Thomas More Church in Decatur, GA and the Aquinas Center of Theology at Emory University, seeking to educate ourselves on the current sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church, its influences and systemic causes, and the reasons for historical and potentially ongoing cover-up. We see this as both a crisis of abuse and of leadership. We understand the urgency to support our sisters and brothers who are survivors of clergy sexual abuse and to eradicate a culture of clericalism which has contributed to cover-up. Our hope is that by learning about the many facets of the issue we can respond in ways that bring positive reform to our Church.
This website will be an ongoing resource for all people—not just our local community—Catholic or not, who wish to learn about the complexity of the crisis, including its theological, ecclesial, legal, and pastoral elements. You will find current news articles, access to official reports and studies, a calendar of educational events in and around Atlanta, and hopefully some ways you can take action.
If your faith community or organization is hosting a relevant event or addressing the crisis in any way, please let us know at email@example.com.
