How should the church handle survivor compensation?

While CLR’s practice is not to post opinion pieces about the church crisis, rather presenting facts, today we share two pieces: one by Paul Elie in The New Yorker and a response by Paul Baumann in Commonweal.

Elie argues that by having an independent outside firm handle survivor claims for compensation, the church is evading responsibility. Baumann responds that no one trusted the church to handle that appropriately so it had to be handled independently from the institution.
