The June cover story in the Atlanta was a piece by former priest James Carroll claiming that the solution to the problem of clericalism was to dismantle the priesthood, that Catholics should be “on our own terms”.

Responses to his article drew mixed criticisms, including from James Martin, SJ at America Magazine. Susan Reynolds, assistant professor of Catholic Studies at Emory University, directly responded in her own Atlantic piece.
